The first download chart launches today.

There's a launch party in London with Shapeshifters, Goldie Lookin Chain and other special guests. Muse, the Streets, Blazing Squad and Westlife with a re-release of Flying Without Wings, are some of the hot contenders.

Mike from the Lostprophets told Radio 1 he thinks it's a great idea, he is a big fan of downloading:

"I like to search the internet for new bands and stuff, so I'll look on a lot of music websites and download some mp3s."

"What I'll always do is if I like a band I'll go out and buy their record. So I'll download a track, just to kind of sample it, I think that's a cool way of doing it."

"Rather than kids taking a chance on their record it allows them to listen to them first so it's good for the band and it's good for the person who is buying records."

The chart will be presented by Scott Mills at 6pm every Wednesday and is compiled from sales of tracks from legal download sites in the UK like iTunes and Napster.

Every Wednesday @ 6pm with Scott Mills.

Just so seb sleeps well tonight: Source: Radio 1

Plenty of people post articles on here and don't credit themselves or the original, i don't think adam was trying to pass it off as his own.

[EDIT] - i think it should be interesting to hear this chart. If babycakes is in the top five it will be confirmed that the uk is being taken over by chavs...

Who cares about the download chart exactly?

With the way people listen to music changing it's trying to be show as a more accurate way of seeing what music is most popular.

I think it has its flaws. There may have been 2 million legal downloads this year, but there must be 2 million illegal downloads per day, so I dont think we'll ever get an accurate single or download chart.

Yeah, I understand Dickie. My post wasnt really directed at yours, I was writing the same time as you, and mine just happened to be after yours so I didnt actually see it.

CDs cost a matter of PENCE to make, the music industry's fault really for not realising it would sell more, and eliminate the need for people to download, if it dropped CD prices... if they had done that, downloading would not be even half as common as it is, legal or otherwise...

Hell of a way to kick off a new chart though, bloody westlife at number 1 first time out. what was rest of top 10 BTW? (can't be a*sed looking, lol).

1st show was ok.

In my opinion it was too short,If you are going to do a top 20 or 40 or whatever all the tracks should be played & not have loads of songs missed out.

Also I dont understand why they bothered broadcasting from the download chart party as hardly anything was broadcast from there in the end.

As for Westlife I cant believe they were number 1,one of the guys from the band said they had done a bit of promo for it yet I never saw any.

And why the hell wernt Liberty X in the chart?,they released a track in time for the chart & are miles better than Westlife & Blazin Sqaud & The Streets.
