Luckily, it's just the radio player that's down. You can actually listen to today's show using the real player links

Despite some of the absolute crap it produces... guess it kinda balances with the good stuff.

See why post something like that? The BBC is a classic case of us all pooling our resources and producing a little something for everyone.

Take that pair of blinkers off boy, they don't go with that outfit

I hope the relaunched player has a skip back 5 min button, it would be really useful for listening to the funny bits again. I'm always half missing what was said as I work, and many a time I have wished for this feature.

Anyone from BBC radio player technology reading this board??

Don't like it :x

It keeps forcing me to use the web page instead of actual Real Player which is rediculous with the clunky useless fast forward system that allows you to skip a 3:45 track and then 1:15 of a link.

Bring back the old way :(

It was always like that - the actual player. Looks like you can't access moyles through real player any more though which is a shame

Mk. wrote:The BBC expanding it's listen again and TV program downloadability is brilliant news. This is why I love the BBC, what commercial organisations would do this?

A few do, but not on quite this scale. I can't say they have added anything new I like, but it looks good (although doesn't seem to work with Mozilla).

Gaspode_The_Wonder_Dog wrote:the bbc claims it funds digital channels and the like via its commercial profits

Does it? I believe they try not to pay more than 10% on digital services.

Gaspode_The_Wonder_Dog wrote:I think its a disgrace there are channels i cant see without purchasing further equipment.

The idea is to encourage people to switch to digital so they can phase out analogue. They’ve done this sort of thing before, e.g broadcasting colour TV even when no one owned one.

If anyone needs the new Moyles links:
rtsp://rmv8.bbc.net.uk/radio1/r1moyles_mon.ra

I am sure you can guess the rest.

Thanks for the new Real Player link

On the actual player though - I like the "resume where you left off" feature

Hope this answers your question....

BBC Radio 1 FAQ wrote:Will you stream your audio in MP3/Quicktime/Windows Media? Why can I not download shows?
Currently, we have no plans to change or add to our Realaudio streams on Radio 1. Unfortunately adding different types of web streams is extremely expensive.

The rights agreement we have the record industry to make shows available to 'listen again' only allows us to stream shows for one week. We are not allowed to make shows downloadable or allow you to move backwards and forwards during shows (except to jump forward by five minutes). As these are terms laid down by the music industry we are unable to change them.

I dont get the skip 5min thing.

How many tracks are 5min long in the first place?.

The having a show available for 1 week rule I dont really get either, its not like you cant listen to a music track for only a week, you can tune in to a radio station and hear a track week after week.

Oh no the bbc have broken the 1 week rule a few times will they get told off by the record industry?,probably not,no.

A skip back 5 min isnt going to kill anyone so y not do it?,You can already go back 5 min by using a slightly teadious way:

click the day of the show ur listening 2 it will load up from the start of the show, then keep pressing the forward 5 min/15 min buttons to get to where you missed(or near to where you missed).

Theres even space for about 2 extra buttons in the new window,ie a skip 1 min & skip back button.

I wonder who comes up with these stupid rules,I really do.

The record industy is behind the times, Theyve only just started to realise the power of downloading.

The "new" player seems to be the same as the old 1 to me except there are more shows to listen 2 and its a bigger window.

There is a kind of useful feature,If you want to watch the news or sumthing you can & then go back to listening to the radio show where you left off.

speaking about the news etc you do get the option to choose WMP or Real.

I would of thought the "new" player would have some improved audio quality but it just seems the same.

Hopefully they will get that sorted in the future.

I think the BBC have somekind of exclusive deal with Real regarding the radio side of things which is probably why you dont get a choice of player, plus the fact that it mite be expensive.

Despite my rambling I actually like the listen again feature believe it or not, just think it still needs tweaking.

These spaces are utilised on non-music shows.... like most of the comedy stuff.... as image below.

The BBC *could* have increased the quality easily, but then their bandwidth costs would have gone up, and it would cost them more. I dont think the quality is that bad at the momment anyway. The reason the use Real is because that gives the best quality per bandwidth used.

And the BBC are very lucky that the record companies let them do this in the first place.
