The reason you can walk on custard is that it's a non-newtonian liquid. Therefore under pressure it becomes a solid allowing you to walk on it.

Oh, BTW, I did actually know that it wasn't true. I just find it strange that people ever believed it in the first place. There's a whole article at snopes about it.
