Works fine for me, probably something wrong with your cookie settings.

Nope, every other phpBB message board i use is fine, just this one that sometimes says i have no new posts to read when i'm casually clicking around the various sections.

I'm fine in both Firefox at home and IE at work. It must be something to do with the cookies, try deleting it and starting over.

What so you have new posts, read some but not others, then come back and they are all marked as read? That has always happened to me, I think that's part of the phpBB cookie settings, couldn't be sure though.

No the problem is: after reading a thread and returning to the list of threads or main forum index, they all get reset to 'no new posts'.

That happens to me too, and always has. You just have to read all the new posts before you go elsewhere.

Sometimes i only want to read a couple though but come back later for the rest. Havnt got any phpBB2 set up at the mo but i know you can tweak the cookies, dont know to what extent though.

You can still keep it open in the background, then it doesn't do it.

Yeah but

e.g.

I get a topic reply in my email and i visit that topic. Sometimes i do that at night before shutting down PC or in morning before i go out.

Its annoying that even if i just read 1 post that all the others get read when i exit.

Well I don't read all threads, so I wouldn't want the threads I chose not to read to still be classed as 'new' when I return - when they aren't new anyway.
