On Friday I was listening to Radio 1 on the way to work. Rachel used the term geek and I found it amusing that people still use the word in a negative light.
I am almost certainly a geek - I enjoy many hobbies and interests generally associated with geeks and people at work have been known to call me a geek in good humour.
The thing is, I'm quite proud that people view me in that way. What's the alternative? It seems like the most "popular" people are those who get incredibly drunk at every oppertunity, are highly concerned with their appearance and also care far too much about what people think about them. These people invariably engage in few (if any) activities other than drinking and/or watching T.V. They are the first to engage in drunken violence at the pub and they have little/no tolerance for anyone unlike themselves.
I have a wife, a child, a great job, an active social life, I am tolerant of other people's views and opinions and I am an incredibly happy person and yet I am a geek.
I heard a great quote the other day - "A geek is someone you bully at school and end up working for later in life."

The long and short of this post is that I am proud to be a geek and so are lots of people I know. So Rachel, many thanks for the compliment ;-)

Quincy - In that case you have reached a healthy balance - there is nothing wrong with being concerned about your appearance or going out, drinking and chatting to women :-)
My point was aimed at those who ONLY are interested in those things.
