The place where everyone hangs out, chats, gossips, and argues
#238511
Please post all comments about the shows Scott does whilst filling in for Chris in the next two weeks in here, so as not to clutter up the rest of the forum. There will be a two week mini review round up by Jono at the end of the fortnight, and Chris will return to the Breakfast Show on Monday the 24th.

As usual, no need to be a registered member to join

How much do you get paid for this Fish heads?

Was a bit dull except for Lloyd today.

He plays A LOT of music. Possibly even more than Jo Whiley.

Lloyd was the 'best' (in comparison to the rest) bit by a mile, although it was nice to hear Aled on air as well. Scott does seem to play an awful lot of music, but to be fair, that could be said of any other R1 DJ if you were to compare them to Chris :D.

It's the one thing that lets most R1 shows down IMO. Whenever you turn it on, you're almost 80% likely to hear any one of about
half a dozen songs. I remember when Madonna made "Hung Up", it was as if it was "Madonna FM". Especially that Jo Whiley. The great thing (for me) about Chris is that he. a) critiques the music honestly and b) doesn't play so damn much of it. I hope Scott settles down a bit and starts talking a bit more.

How dare a music station play music

Scott was rather poor this morning. Only heard from half 8 onwards, but there was nothing that stood out.

I disagree. Most people listen to the breakfast show (on almost any station aimed at a young audience) for the banter between presenters or presenter and news/sport/traffic/callers.

Banter is what you need - unless you're Roy Castle in which case it's dedication

I completely agree with points a) and b) and the one about Scott as well, although as he always sticks rigidly to the playlist and plays every song he's supposed to, I don't think there's much chance of him playing any less music just because he's filling in for Chris. The whole reason I listen to Chris is the chat. I don't actually like a large percentage of the music on the R1 playlist, so I certainly don't listen to the station for the music.

The point I was reffering to was when the guest poster was talking about radio 1 in general, not the breakfast show, and how it played "too much music". If you want chat, listen to 5 live - Simon Mayo is really good. As it happens I think Radio 1 strikes a good balance between chat and music since it is a music station which most people seem to forget when criticising the station

you'll struggle to hear Mayo at breakfast though!

I've actually been listening to 5 Live breakfast these last couple of days. Really good. I used to think Nicky Cambell was an idiot, quite like him now!

I was talking in more general terms, but if you really wanted mayo at breakfast you could always use Listen Again!

Only listened to the last hour of the show this morning. Didnt really likie it that much

One of the things i like about Chris on breakfast is that he talks alot, but with Scott he seems to play to much music, and when he does talk it's normally in short bursts, and then we get more music.

The thing with Chris is that he makes the show sound just like my mates would in the pub (even got a brummie bird with a GRAAYT accent, posh bird and an egghead for my mates) and when he has to choose between songs on the playlist, he picks the better of the two and Tedious link has some of the best tunes around.

Mills is good at drivetime and has had some good features (Laura's Diary, Flirt Divert) but today's show had nothing but a ten year old kid phoning up an estate agents which is the sort of thing we'd come up with at student radio back in the day...

He sounds too much like the old school breakfast presenters - nice to people and everything, never says a bad word about anybody...no-one is really like that. It needs more banter.

Re GF05: I dont think any DJ on Radio 1 can play too much music. It is a MUSIC STATION after all.

It's Chris who doesn't play enough, not Scott playing too much.

Not to cause an argument but Radio 1 is renowned for it's DJ's talking a lot more than on other stations and while some people do criticise this, remember that in the early days of Radio 1 they were forced to talk more often because of the restrictions placed upon them by P.P.L..

When the restricitions were lifted in 1988 (yes, I'm old) and Radio 1 could play as much music as they wanted they tried an experiement called "More Music Day" which was a monumental faliure because so many people (myself included) called the station to say how bad it was. Only about 1/3 of listeners liked it.

So Yes Radio 1 is a new music station but most people who just want music can listen to something else. Those people who want "personality" presenters listen to Radio 1 and when Scott Mills gets a personality he'll be worth listening to.

I totally agree with this point.

Today's show was a lot better than Monday and Tuesday.

Highlight was perhaps Laura proving any one can sing on a record

I do think the the 'wind-up calls' with Lloyd are just another version of a very lazy, unoriginal radio feature though, surely even you would have to admit that Jono?

And a pub quiz or Celebrity Tarzan isn't? No one made it out to be not lazy or original, and I think there's plenty of people who quite like them, I don't mind them.

Lloyd's an amusing hyper-active kid, who they might as well use for the show whilst he's in London, and really he is mainly what makes the calls funny rather than winding up the caller.

Personally I've never heard another DJ do a pub quiz on the radio for pure entertainment value, obviously there are lots of quizzes but very few with no prizes and mainly just for the team to do.

Celeb Tarzan is a very well worn feature that's been done from the dawn of time. Chris' one differs slightly in that normaly it's just the celeb voices sped up or just a tiny clip of them and with his they do something slightly daft.

Regardless of whether they are original or not they have one thing in common in that it gets people listening to play along too. Scot doesn't have any features like that. The best wind up's he's done was "The Take Away game" because it's the two restaurants windind each other up - a very original take on a very old theme.

Mostly though I just like it when Chris berates the callers

I meant along the lines of lazy features...

Andy B wrote:Regardless of whether they are original or not they have one thing in common in that it gets people listening to play along too. Scot doesn't have any features like that.

May be not, but he's not aiming to be Moyles, in terms of the rest of Radio 1 Scott is original, which is alot more than what can be said about the rest of the DJs bar Moyles.

Andy B wrote:The best wind up's he's done was "The Take Away game" because it's the two restaurants windind each other up - a very original take on a very old theme.

But many people would then argue this isn't original either.

Andy B wrote:Mostly though I just like it when Chris berates the callers

Sure, but again, this isn't Chris Moyles. He's on holiday this week

Anyway, you say in previous posts he lacks features, and he lacks banter. I would agree with that about Monday and Tuesday, I think today though he had the balance right.

True he's not Moyles. I never said I didn't like him in general, just sad at the moment he's not that good at breakfast..

Maybe he's just finding his morning feet.

I've always felt the key to the Moyles show with Mills was the parodies of features, but there's a lot for Scott to parody at the moment.

I would agree he's better in the afternoon, I think the pressure isn't on as much.

Anyway, Ant and Dec is on the show tomorrow if anyone's interested.

Good to know, thanks!
