Maybe its not all an act like we thought, maybe he is as sad and lonely and depressed as he says he is. Maybe we have pushed him over the edge with our unthinking and uncaring excuses for humour. I really hope not.

Ok, first this is not what I think is happening here, but the obvious extrapolation of what you said is that if a deliberately hurtful comment which you consciously made to someone then caused that someone significant distress, you would not care or admit any responsibility for the actions of that person, simply because they are a stranger and if you don't know them, they aren't allowed to be affected by your behaviour towards them? You remind me of my brother in law. Except he can't play table tennis.
