you're correct, sort of. like all things involving language, it's sort of a grey area. collective nouns can go both ways in regards to the singular or plural verb conjugation. in american english, it usually takes the singular.

I thought as it's a team, ie one team, and the team name is the subject (or is it the object?) of the sentence, it would be singular. It just sounds better the other way.

I said this in the chat room last night and got accused of being a "cheerful bugger", but I'm going to say it anyway.. my mum and her other half are big QPR fans and Mrs Topher and I went with them to a match last season at Loftus Road. We put a bet on for Ray Jones to score first because he has exactly the same name as our mate's dad, who died previously in his 40s.

Mum has decided it's an unlucky name. Nice gesture by Burnley though, holding an open training session and donating the proceeds to a charity of QPR's choice.
