Joel is actually a really nice name I think, and considering the other possibilities (Lennon, Cody, etc) it could have been a lot worse.

Actually, perhaps someone can shed some light on something for me.. my sister was due to go in yesterday at 7am to have the operation, but her waters broke at about 1.00 yesterday morning, so my mum took her in then. They gave her drugs to stop the labour because they still wanted to do a cesarian, but she didn't get taken into theatre until 6pm because other emergencies took her place. I'd have thought the fact that the little fella has signalled he's ready to come out would and they've given her drugs to stop him would kinda make her an emergency?

I don't understand...

Congratulations Topher, he's goooooorgeous and the choice of first name is outstanding - how about Elijah for a middle name, then they'll have got it perfect! Isn't he tiny? My Joel was nearly twice his weight at five weeks early, if he'd gone full term I'd have been in very serious trouble................

Not sure about the C section question really, I think it would depend a lot on why they had elected to do one in the first place. And if labour had succesfully been stopped, she would have been quite safe and the baby too, so she needn't have been deemed urgent. If the drugs hadn't stopped the labour (which sometimes happens) they would have delivered him immediately I would think. Well, they'd have to, one way or the other.

Anyway, I think the key lies in why they were doing a section, it could be one of a whole lot of different reasons, and many of them could have a bearing on how urgently she needed to be dealt with.

I think he's only 11 days early and I think he was quite small, which is why they opted for the C section (like it.. now I don't have to try and spell ces.. cesa.. you know). She had to have steroids to try and develop his lungs a bit quicker a few weeks ago.

I don't think they'll go for Elijah as a middle name, purely because they compromised on his family tradition* by saying the middle name will begin with a 'G', because they couldn't agree on one that they both liked enough for the first name.

*The first boy of every generation must begin with a 'G'. Stupid rule.

Apparently when I was born, it was traditional that the child was named after his grandparent on his fathers side but there had been a f*ck up somewhere along the way and every child had been named George for about 200 years (i've got Uncle Georges / Grandad Georges / Auntie Georges - the works) so my grandad on my mums side thought he was in with a chance of me being named after him - that annoyed Grandad George.

So the 'rents told everyone to piss off and called me Foot-Loose instead. 'Mazin.

Haha, well he's in hospital until Tuesday at the earliest, due to his low weight. He has to be fed every three hours, regardless of whether or not he wants it, apparently. He's fine though, I think.

Sounds like they thought your sister might be at risk of developing pre-eclampsia (it's nasty, you don't want that), which would explain the elective and early section. 5lb plus is not a bad weight really, little lad is just petite! The feeding whether he likes it or not is because of his size - smaller babies tend to develop more severe neo-natal jaundice than massive ones, and regular feeding helps the bilirubin break down more quickly and not cause problems, so it's not just to make him bigger quickly!

I like the name Gethen if it has to be a G. As long as they don't mind it being Welsh.......
