It will never happen, but it bloody well should. I might even BUY the single if it comes out!

Because in its own way its just as cynical and soulless as the real thing. As Topher said, the charts are irrelevant these days - and Simon Cowell is one of the reasons for that. Peter Kay cashing in doesn't make it any better really.

It is pretty much the exact opposite of X Factor though. And about the only way the public would be able to get one over on Cowell. Any single 'act' wouldn't stand a chance now - they need the backing of a TV programme to promote it.

The charts are irrelevant. It used to be that people would discuss the current number one, that you would go out and buy something you wanted to be number one based on the merit of the song. I remember being genuinely pissed off that The Fugees were number one yet again. I never, ever know what's number one now. The fact that it's pretty much a given that the Christmas number one will be the X-Factor single is a sad indictment of the charts now.

And what replaces the charts?

Nothing - you like a song, you download it - or the album. You generally don't find out where it gets to (I don't anyway).
