OK, I could be wrong but I think of the 50 states, more than half have constitutional amendments banning same sex marriage and some go so far as to ban any unions that even RESEMBLE marriage. In the mid-90s the Federal Government enacted some law that said it would not recognize same-sex marriage. Some bullshit law with some noble sounding name, basically. I can't remember it but it was something that made you think they felt like they were heading off to the Crusades.

I think that New Jersey, California (who knows now though?), New Hampshire and some other east coast state whose name escapes me at the moment (Maine or Vermont?) have “civil unions” where even though it’s not ‘marriage’ they get the same rights as heterosexual married couples to Social Security, family leave, etc. And I think Hawaii and like 4 or 5 other states have “legal unions” but I don’t think they get the same benefits.

California’s Prop 8 eliminated (in our state) the right of same sex couples to marry. Its wording amended our state constitution by adding that “Only a marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California.” I think I’m right in saying there’s plenty of lawsuits already under way because a lot of same sex couples had gotten married prior to this passing and what’s to happen to their marriages?! It’s all rather stupid. I think they need to lean more towards blocking marriages to parties of MORE THAN 2 individuals (like the men in those sects that collect wives like marbles or stamps). The Federal Government and the Bible belt individuals with their medieval methods of subscribing to this ‘man and woman’ thing is bullshit. It’s as I’ve always said, if same sex couples want to marry and be miserable like the rest of us, they should be allowed.
