Got loads of snow, I left the house (crawley) at 5:45 to get to Windsor for 7am, but got to Leatherhead at 8:10 instead. Not good, but have just been told I can work from home.... Might take the rest of the day to get home mind you!!

We had a thin covering this morning, but it was bloody slippy driving in. It's snowing quite hard now though.

We have got about eight inches of snow and its still snowing and is going to get worse. Normally this would be pissing me off mightily but Miss Yudster's college is closed, baby Yudster's school is closed, the roads are blocked so Jon can't get to the station and there are no trains even if he could, so we are having a proper snow day. Nothing to do but have fun.

It's snowing fairly heavily now, the snow that's already settled isn't that thick though.

My dad's just text me to say he can't get into uni; mind you, this does not surprise me. Last time it snowed, I was living at his house and he rang in to tell them he couldn't get off his driveway. I managed to get to work without a problem and I was parked on EXACTLY THE SAME DRIVEWAY!

I can't understand why the buses in London are cancelled either - you can't tell me that snow has settled on London's roads, which are never free of traffic.

We've got about 10" and it's started again. Not settling this time though. The missus has been told to stay at home. No one around here is driving faster than 5mph. I'm inside with the fire on and the dogs on my lap.

Melting here now. Why does this country grind to a halt at the smallest snow fall? My kids are off school - even though the roads are relatively clear - everyone is talking about it and saying how bad it is yet in other countries the world does not come to a halt just because there's a few inches of snow, a few feet maybe but it's hardly that in most places. I think we've gone soft. Even trains have stopped running around here, it's not that bad people!

I'm sure the Scots on here will back me up as they cope with the amount of snow we have in England today on a regular basis, it may shut a few roads but most people carry on with their daily lives there.

The point is that the infrastructure neded to cope with "a few inches of snow" (we have 14 here so far......and it is settling on the roads, all the roads - the A12 has packed snow across all lanes and its definitely NOT melting, we have more coming) costs money, and when you only get a few inches of snow once in a blue moon, its simply not worth doing. They get a lot more snow in Scotland - of course they are set up to deal with it, it makes sense for them to be. It certainly isn't something I want my council tax being spent on though.

I was referring more to the fact that the schools have closed round here for absolutely no reason. We have only had about 3 inches of snow, the roads are clear, the heating is working why are they off? Why does the slightest flurry mean that they have closed? I accept that we are not "set up to deal with it" but there are limits to why things should grind to a halt surely? It's a bit like when it's raining people lose the ability to drive. I know that some people have worse snow than here but it does seem to be a general rule that even a few flakes now mean that we have to hide in our homes and bemoan the weather - again.

Camden have apparently shut all their parks for "Health & Safety" reasons! What is the point? Snow & no school mean that he kids want to go and make snowmen and have snowball fights where can they do that if they have closed the parks? The country has gone crazy!

I said pretty much exactly that to my friend a moment ago who was moaning about people not coping with snow very well in this country.

Well its true - what is the point in investing in loads of snow clearing gear and special stuff for busses and whatever when we will only use them once or twice a decade? This is the south of England, significant snow is unusual here - its perfectly acceptable to be thrown by an unusual situation!
