I don't see the problem in showing support for Chris by changing your avatar. I would have a problem with it if it said how much had been donated. Filling the board with wee red squares is pretty harmless and it might remind someone to donate as well.

Charla and her mate have a list of 100 things that they'll do one of for Comic Relief, number 100 is the least embarrassing and number 1 is really bad.

Basically the more money they raise the further up the list they'll go so peoples' incentive is to donate more to make poor wee Charla do something really bad.

I think it's a fantastic idea really.
