There was some test that went around last year via email, maybe the year before, that linked you to a website that asked how you pronounce certain things. You answered the barrage of questions and then it said whether you were a Yankee or a Redneck. Needless to say, I was a Yankee. It was quite clever. I'll have to see if I can find it, you lot would love the questions.

Thing is, you have often stated that you "have no accent" which, when I heard you on the radio, was palpably nonsense. So you clearly don't have a clue how you pronounce things anyway, meaning that you really aren't the best judge in the matter!

another similar one I heard last nite on an oft-repeated episode of Friends (where the characters/actors are New Yorkers, not from the South): "seerp" for 'syrup'.

And "flarn" for "flan", another one highlighted in Friends (that well known depiction of rednecks.....). Its not about strong regional accents, there's nothing wrong with those, but there's is nothing dialectic about "erb" or any of the others mentioned here, its just affectation. And as for blaming it on the southerners, that might be the case if any of this were about regional variations but its not, its pretty universal.

I do. I'm not deaf. I'm American and I shed my New York accent after moving out here ages ago. I suppose if anything (to your finely tuned ears) I have a Southern California accent, which apparently is unpardonable.

Apparently Jennifer Aniston (I believe she was the offending party on this occasion) was born in California but grew up in New York. The others aren't, apart from Schwimmer as you say.

Actually the ones around me say "Joshuwah". They do, however, say "Jagwar," which is just as bad. I do not. I make use of the letter 'U' - I just don't feel the need to stuff it into words that sound just fine without it, like you people.

Also, when I say Jaguar someone usually 'corrects' me.
