'Suspicious' fire wrecks Big Breakfast house
The Big Breakfast house has been severely damaged in a fire.
The "suspicious" blaze at Channel 4's famous Lock Keepers cottage in Bow, east London, started in the early hours.
Foul play is suspected because the building was unoccupied and no longer had an electrical or gas supply, said a London Fire Brigade spokesman.
The Big Breakfast house closed its doors for the last time on March 29 this year.
The house was put on the market soon after and was expected to fetch more than £1 million.
But today's fire destroyed the roof and almost half of the first floor.
Twenty firefighters battled for almost two hours to control the blaze, which is thought to have started in the second floor of the two-storey building, said the Fire Brigade spokesman.
The Big Breakfast show was launched by then-unknowns Chris Evans and Gaby Roslin in 1992.
Double-act Johnny Vaughan and Denise Van Outen also proved popular presenters, drawing large audiences to the breakfast slot.
But presenters Richard Bacon, Amanda Byram and Mike McClean saw ratings slump to 250,000 towards the end of the show's 10-year run, and it was finally axed.
