Is crap. He didnt know that the Beatles sang the song Something, more to the point it was George Harrison who wrote and sang the song. That got my goat today, sorry to get that off my chest. I know you ones say im like an encyclopedia but im not, i dont know a lot of things, like the tracklisting of Richard Marx greatest hits but "Something" is a glaringly obvious bit of trivia. Hes only dead last year and they kept playing it on the radio.

I didn't know that but then if I heard it I might have known, but Aled's knowledge does seem a bit crap. He says he knows the songs but when hes tested he can't get any.

Also he didn't know The Jam and A Town Called Malice when it was a Tedious Link - even I know that and I wasn't born!

I feel a bit mean now.

I'm not a big fan of George's work with the Beatles, (except the sublime Something, which I knew, by the way, and am disgusted also that Aled did not!) but some of his own stuff was good, Here Comes the Sun etc...

My knowledge of music IS attrocious.

I was employed at Radio 1 because of my love of radio and for my programme and item ideas, not for my vast knowledge of music. There are a vast number of people at Radio 1 who do possess this vast knowledge of music here so it's ok.

I'm good in playlist because I connect with the target audience better than some of the others and because I'm fairly good at predicting what songs will work with our audience and on Radio 1.

I'm also crap with names. I may know a song, more often than not I'll be able to describe the singer, and the video but not remember it's names.

I'm comfortable with this.

Lets be fair to Aled..Radio 1 play Music THEY want to play...and that is popular..so he doesnt need to have a massive knowledge of music unless he was presenting a "specialist" show such as Evening session..lock up..Breezeblock

Aleds knowledge of music is what is required for a modern day radio station

I've actually given up on Radio 1 completely and now listen to CD's or Virgin radio if I happen to be at home on the basis that I will never hear shite like Ja Rule or Nelly....

The point is thought that Radio 1 tries to cater for people who like popular music, and that playlist is a total mix of popular current chart music, it's not like they just leave one genre out completely, they have a total mixture! But if you are someone who ONLY likes say, rock/indie music then of course you're going to be disappointed with the playlist, because you only like one genre out of the however many that are included in the playlist, so you like the minority.

Well said magenta, I agree with that. It's all very well complaining, but you have to remember that for every song Radio 1 play, there's gonna be someone out there who like it.
