Religion, well I have no problem believing it & I believe there may be something out there, however I don't necessarilly believe what's written. I do dislike been told that I'm wrong because I'm not religious however.

I'm a Christian - Church of England. We were brought up as churchgoers, then allowed to decide for ourselves when we were old enough. My bro became an atheist (albeit one who teaches religious studies), I am still a Christian. I have a big cross tattooed on my forearm and I usually wear one around my neck too, so I don't hide it, but I don't talk about it much. I don't go to church that often anymore, altho I live right across the road from Manchester Cathedral, so I keep meaning to go and see what the services are like there.

I hate having arguments or debates about religion, cos it's pointless. People will very rarely change their beliefs (like with arguing vegetarianism), so you just end up going round in circles. I'm not an argumentative person anyway - I'd rather just believe what I believe and let others do the same, and everyone be happy with that.

I will also mention that for anyone interested, there's a great book called The Year Of Living Biblically by AJ Jacobs, written by a guy who tries to interpret the Bible literally for a year. Whether you're religious or not, it's a very funny and educational read.

I'd just like to come out and say I'm also a Christian - (cradle) Catholic. Not a very good one, but still, I have my beliefs. I went to church today (well yesterday - Saturday) in fact. I'm at odds with the Church a lot of the time, but I also don't think I'd be the same person without it. I need it.*

*Actually, make that my belief in God, more than the Catholic Church.

My ex fiance was an atheist. If we'd gone on to get married I wouldn't have been comfortable asking him to get married in a church, and I know he wouldn't have been comfortable doing it. If you believe in God you can sense his presence anywhere, so I'd have been fine in a different location.

If you don't believe in God then you can't sense his presence anywhere, so a church would had the same religious/spiritual connotations as a bus shelter. If he's really an atheist, he shouldn't care about where he got married; unless he specifically doesn't want to finance a church.

That's an interesting perspective. I can't imagine someone being in a church - especially a traditional one - and not being aware of the religious and spiritual connotations of their surroundings, especially during a Christian marriage ceremony with its many, substantial references to marrying in the eyes of God. But I guess some people are able to just ignore that. It still seems strange to me, choosing a ceremony that just means nothing to you to for one of the most important days of your life.

I agree with Console about marriage in a church; for our wedding, I can compromise on literally everything except for the bride, because that's what really matters, isn't it? Besides - if nothing else, a lot of churches are very nice looking buildings.

Heh - nothin like a little religion thread to get everyone goin!

My logic is that on one hand I don't think there is a god and that organised religion is the cause of, or at least the excuse of, more trouble in this world than is needed. On the other hand, I have as much proof that there ISN'T some higher power as those who believe in God have of his existence.

Therefore I think it is a bit hypocritical of me to go as far as the athiests and say "there is no god - yer all nuts". I'll just sit back and get on with life - if I end up outside a set of pearly gates at some point i'll know I was wrong and hope that whatever god is in charge is a decent guy. Actually, chances are that if I am wrong, I'll be going to hell anyways.

I am getting married in a church as thats what the in-laws wanted. I would have got married anywhere and been happy as I love my girlfriend. Its no skin off my nose getting married in church. The church is beautful. And like I said i believe there is a higher being just not the god and bible combo.

I believe in God, enough to pray every night but I do not believe in Jesus at all so I don't really think I can put myself in any category of what religion I follow. Despite this, when I get married it would be in a church because I don't really feel you're married unless you do it in a church- partly because of doing it in the eyes of God thing but also it just doesn't feel right to me generally.

Well there is far more evidence of Jesus existing then of God existing. More evidence than Alexander the Great.
