Sorry to drag an old topic up but... after the much derided (rightly in my opinion) logo, I actually really like the mascots:









They are Wenlock and Mandeville - Wenlock is named after the Shropshire town of Much Wenlock whose games in the 1800s inspired Pierre de Coubertin to start the modern Olympics movement and Mandeville after Stoke Mandeville hospital in Bucks, where the Paralympics started.

Hahaha, I'm reading comments on the BBC website (always a dangerous pastime) and they're going mad about it... a few sensible comments, but mainly Daily Mail style outrage... by far the best is this:

Absoulutely disgusting.

This is what all these years of labour has given to us. A government completely out of touch with the people due to their own selfishness and ignorance.

And now a whole generation of representatives and civil servants who also are completely ignorant and disillusioned.

These mascots are the most disgusting things ive ever seen. In no way are they cute, have personality or appeal to children with such bland and emotionless persona.

Their design is also way out of touch. What kid would want these characters on a poster above their bed when they look like a heap of molten lead with a cyclops eye??

This is frightening to see how out of touch with the world the people that control us are....

I'll be honest, I rather like them, makes a nice changed from the usual old lion/bulldog nonsense that gets bought up every time (although if we do get the World Cup in 2018 I would expect them to go that way, although a Lion would make sense seeing as there's three lions on the England badge/crest). They do actually have a back story to them as well for a change.

Most stupid comments I saw on the BBC Website was something along the lines of "Mandaville? Why give it a French name" or something along those lines (ignorance as usual) and the ultimate classic of "I hate them, I'm going to boycott everything to do with London 2012 when it comes round, including London itself" (twunt)
