The place where everyone hangs out, chats, gossips, and argues

Former Rise presenter Colin Murray has been unveiled as the new signing for BBC Radio 1 as it replaces its long-running music show The Evening Session.
Steve Lamacq, who has presented the showcase for alternative sounds on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays since 1993, will finish his run on 19 December.

The Evening Session was axed to give a "fresh approach" to the 8-10pm slot, but he will continue to host Lamacq Live on Monday evenings.

Murray's new show, which will start on 7 January, will be dedicated to showcasing the best new bands across many musical genres.

The 25-year-old is no stranger to Radio 1 having been co-presenting the weekly Session in Northern Ireland, which runs in place of Lamacq in the province on Thursdays.

Murray said: "I'm busting to get going on the show and from the very start this will be balls out, straight-for-the-throat and a bit of a riot."

Murray was one of five original presenters of Channel 4's breakfast show Rise.

But he quit after six months to begin working on the newly-launched Channel 4 music show Born Sloppy with Sara Cox.

Radio 1 controller Andy Parfitt said: "We're really pleased that Colin is going to be launching the show for us. It's time for a fresh approach to underground and alternative music and this show will totally champion that idea.

"Colin is a fresh young talent that is going places at Radio 1."

The station could not comment on reports that it was still negotiating with Zane Lowe, from London-based rock station Xfm, to take over the evening slot on a long-term basis.

But the station did confirm that its Thursday night shows in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland would continue.

Steve Lamacq signed a new contract with Radio 1 earlier this year, and is also now appearing on digital station 6 Music
