I don't get this statement by Eddie Izzard. If you live outside of London or anywhere where the events are being held or you aren't going to see any events, it doesn't make the slightest jot of difference where the games are because you're not in any way part of it. If it was in France, Canada, New Zealand, wherever, you'd still be watching it on TV and reading about it in the papers so the fact that it's in the UK and won't be again on our lifetimes is largely irrelevant.

I love the Olympics. I love any big sporting competition to be fair, but I really love the Olympics. However - the only advantage I can see in it being in Britain is that the events will be happening at reasonable times for me to watch them live. Other than that, I think I would rather they were happening elsewhere.

I have absolute confidence in our ability to run the Games really well, we're good at sporting events and I think we will be fine. However the Olympics is almost as much about the surrounding glitz and razzmatazz as it is the events - I'm not sure we are all that good at that. I find myself almost dreading what we might come up with for the opening ceremony.

Also, like it or lump it, its going to be overwhelming in terms of general coverage and attention, and for people who are living, travelling and working in the areas near the venues, I think its going to be an absolute nightmare.

Not really. If you're in the north east or south west, or don't have tickets, how are you going to get involved? Drive to an event which you'll stand outside of and not watch or sit in front of the TV, same as every other nation what aren't soting the olympics?

I agree with what LordMonkcheese is saying. I won't be able to get involved. I currently live nowhere near where anything is taking place and I wasn't going to apply for tickets a year in advance as I don't have a clue what I will be doing this time next year.

Well I for one am getting fed up with the coverage on the BBC.

It's more the presenters taking a negative approach to everything.

The things have been built on time, on budget, and have created a huge legacy for the UK.

But if you're actually interested in seeing the events and following what's going on in the Olympics, why would you do that? And saying "anyone could get involved" - not really - I live within a 45 minute train journey of the main Olympic venues and apart from getting caught up in hoards of traffic and having the trains disrupted for months I certainly can't get involved. I will be watching on my telly, enjoying it all hugely I hope - and the fact that its in England won't make the tiniest bit of difference to my enjoyment of the whole thing.

I really really really don't care about the Olympics. The Commonwealth Games I am slights more interested in because it is likely someone will give the Glasgow Underground system a really good mop up before hand. Other than that, I reckon they will annoy me as well.

Perhaps I am letting the title fool me but I disagree, it is very much the London Olympics. Aside from the city, the only places I would care about it would be Glasgow or Edinburgh because they would personally affect me. Probably not in a good way.

The fact that we're hosting it is only irrelevant to those who are falling over themselves to make sure everyone knows they're not interested and who are trying to be fashionably dismissive.

The tourism / associated events and organisational impacts will be felt outside london. If you've never been to a major sporting event then I can understand the ignorance, but I'd recommend anyone with even a passing interest should go along to the free-to-all events - and anyone with a passing interest should go and get involved with the Olympic Village / big screen / public activities.

I've done world cups and european championshiops, and I know even just milling around or sitting about watching the crowds will be amazing.

No. I am far from indifferent to the Olympics, I love it and am looking forward to it. But because I love the events, and want to be able to see them, and follow them, clearly and comprehensively, I am not the slightest bit interested in seeing any of them live. I will watch them on television where I will get the best view and the best coverage of each event, and be able to follow more than one event at a time if I want to.

So the location is genuinely irrelevant to me, even though I am as excited as anything about the Olympics.
