I think the problem mainly occurs when the delivery person is careless in their handling of the pizza box. Obviously as I can only eat homemade pizza, it's not really something I have to deal with, but I have seen it happen.

Yep, I do sometimes make my own. I've never made bases from scratch, though. I just buy the bases, sauce, soy cheese and toppings (usually vegan sausage and bacon) and throw 'em all together.
