The place where everyone hangs out, chats, gossips, and argues

Also, it is seeming less and less likely that Chris will make a return in the new year as was once speculated.

To be honest I've thought this for a long time. The 'surprise' Big Boss Ben talked about on Radio 4 back in July was seemingly taking over Grimmy's show and that hasn't come to fruition. It could still happen but I'm not holding my breath. I would be delighted to be proved wrong!

Until they announce a permanent replacement for that show it is still a possibility though. I only want him to return to radio when he genuinely wants to though. When he has been asked about a return he has sounded far from enthusiastic. When he was asked if he missed radio on Sunday Brunch he said he missed getting things off his chest and hanging around with the team, "but that's about it".

Chris talks with far more enthusiasm about what he did with JCS and his future projects than he does about radio.

True it just seems to me that Ben had a plan and it was to to unveil Chris as 'the saviour of evening radio' sometime after the initial announcement but before the end of the show. As you've said Chris seems more enthused about non-radio projects and that along with the lack of any news seems to suggest it's not happening.

On a related note It's exactly 4 months tomorrow since Chris made the announcement the breakfast show was ending!

Hold on - just seen that Dan and Phil have the request show - what's the * point? They're quite funny but they've been given an almost entirely music show - useless!

Does anyone else find the radio 1 TV adverts curently running hilarious? The DJs sat next to you presenting their shows.

The guy sat with Grimshaw is so not a radio 1 breakfast show listener.

This really is sad. Sooner or later Radio 1 management must start to realise what a mistake they're making, surely? "Crisis" is a pretty overused word in the media, but that's just what Radio 1 is heading for.

2012 has definitely seen the death of Radio 1 for me.

But At the end of the day, all good things come to an end, and I'm just happy that I was around for the 2002-2012 era of Radio 1. Because right now, it's turning into a teenagers radio station.

Sara Cox might as well leave now as well.

Its certainly barking mad. Im really not convinced an audience exists anymore for how young they want to target.

What's really sad is that historically R1 have always replaced people with something more edgy, more exciting but now they are dumbing down. They are replacing with something less exciting more generic dross. The idea is young people will listen because they're is nothing inaccessible, nothing they have to ponder. Thing is first people will mentally switch off, then they will physically switch off - they have no motivation to listen if nothing grips them. Frankie Boyle did a bit about it in his second book where he said when people appeal to the masses they have to dumb down to connect to enough people - it sorta rings true with what R1 are trying.

I can't find Jake Humphrey's tweet - did he delete it? Also, I had no idea until just now that he left the BBC. :(

He's going to do football with BT Vision. Disappointing that he won't be presenting F1 but can understand with a baby on the way why he wouldn't want to be travelling the globe. Think I'm going to try & make his book signing tomorrow

That makes sense and I think it's a good move, would hope he's biding his time for a BBC/Sky sports opportunity, Jeff Stelling's still the top dog, but JH isn't far behind him.

Seems to me, as an outsider looking in, Radio 1 is going through a generational shift in terms of presenters and demographics. Have there been similar large shifts in the past for R1? For example, who came on board R1 when Chris started? Did he, and a group of new "upstarts" take over from the older, established presenters? Was there a backlash from the listeners then?

Just curious.

There have been 'purges' in the past, the Smashey and Nicey sketches on Harry Enfield were essentially a parody of the goings on at Radio 1 when the original old guard left.

It's cyclical - I don't really remember there being a huge influx of 'upstarts', probably because the presenters who left were the story, not those coming in - though I remember Chris being making comments about old presenters, presumably to make a point of there being a new mood to the show.

In short, the cosmic ballet continues.

Apologies, just noticed you're in Wisconsin and therefore might not know who Smashey and Nicey are - or Harry Enfield for that matter - it was a series of parody sketches of old, out of touch, set in their ways DJs who used to be the superstars of Radio Fab FM (Radio 1) and 'youth' TV who were sacked and sent to work at "Quiet FM" where they talked about how great they used to be.

So is this real or parody? Wasn't there a shot of two of Chris Evans in that clip?

No apologies necessary, but thanks! I find this all pretty interesting.

Oh, it's a proper doc, baby. Smashie and Nicey are a parody.

Also not real: Santa Clause, The Tooth Fairy and Jedward.

Nice one, I've not seen that before.

Good to see the drama is in no way overplayed...

Eerily prophetic about Danny Baker too.

The difference between then and now was that Matthew Bannister tried to invigorate the station, not dumb it down. In fact, some of the best DJs who have ever been on Radio 1 joined the station during his tenure, including our Chris... I think that says a lot.

Bruno Brookes was one of the "Dinosaur" DeeJays sacked by Trevor Dann, at the age of 36. Chris was 38 when he was booted off Breakfast.

Yeah, they will struggle to attract the younger generation now anyway who have different ways of connecting with new music, while driving away millions that have been listening to the station for years. Publicity stunts like giving Robbie the Quo treatment and forcing out the older DJs will only work if you have a plan other than wall-to-wall teen TV presenters and Wrong Direction on repeat play.

The first full set of listening figures since TCMS ended will make fascinating reading, and show how much the core audience has collapsed. And of course if the Government puts the boot into the BBC after Savilegate and slashes funding, a failing R1 could be in line for the axe in a reorganisation of national radio.
