:!: **WARNING** Long explanatary post ** WARNING** :!:

Going back to the Tuna thing, what was meant is that Americans (I'm being stereotypical, I don't mean all Americans, some must get it right) have a problem with words with the "U" sound in it after a "T" like Tuna, Tuesday, Tube and Tuba etc. In such a place the letter "U" actually makes a "U" sound like the name of the letter and not an "OOOH" sound as in "Loo" Americans don't seem to get this English language concept and they say Toosday, toobe, toona and tooba without making the U sound. phonically sounded out, those words are pronounced:

chew - na (Tuna)
chews - day (Tuesday) and
Chewb (Tube).
Chew - ba (Tuba)

Obviously you pronounce the "t" as a"t" and not really a "Ch" but that ws to make the point on the pronounciation of the next phonic sound in the word.

Thankyou for your time, you can relax now.

and also one of the most retarded. eddie, are you some sort of linguist or something? oh wait, you're not!

phonemic variation between america and england is totally common and not a bad thing. it's very interesting in fact, but it's not to say that americans pronounce words like "toona" incorrectly, just not like you.

you see, both ways are infact correct. so stop being so smug/arrogant.

don't make me get out my big english grammar....

American's speak American English, it is not English. In English to pronounce Tuna as Toona woudl be INCORRECT so by our standars, Kendram you are actually incorrect but in America you are right!

eddie teaching english! ha!

eddie, i seriously doubt that you spend time looking at any grammars, let alone any formal studies of phonology or morphology for that matter. standard english and american english are very different, as you concede, but it's not to the point that american english is a language of its own. it's more like a dialect. therefore, we can say tuna, you can say chuna, and if you still want to bitch about how we pronounce things you can, but then again, you bitch about everything.

I will be and am teaching English to 5 and 6 year olds already and have been praised for my ability to do so. And Kendra, you can't spend time looking at "gramaS" (with an S on the end), but you can look at Grammar (no S), it is gramatically incorrect and makes no sense to put an S on the end of the word "grammar".

eddie you might know english to teach it to 5 and 6 year olds but you sure as hell don't know jack about english as a language (apart from your minimal skills in using it). have you even read anything about linguistics? many people write grammars about every language you can imagine. hence there are multiple grammars, with the s. this could include things such as your conventional notion a grammar with the case and proper word useage, but also deals with sound shifts, phonology, morphology, othography, syntax, semantics, and so forth. god. you are the most pedantic person i've ever come across.

you didn't invent the language sidla. old english, the beginning of our silly language began on the continent by west germanic peoples. it was then spiked by norman french after the conquest and blah blah blah. check out theo venemann's work.

this is a matter of linguistics.

I'm wondering when Kendra is going to realise that I come on this board because I like to annoy people and have arguments on here. In real life I am one of the least confrontaional and argumentative person you'll meet, i'd arther let something go than start an argument. On here if I say something slightly controversial, certain members will bite back and I love that, I'll reply again then they will but when they do they seem so very annoyed...it's great fun!

That's true actually. But you still call the language English, so as an English person, I say that I'm right.
