right im supposed to be going to uni in septemeber im on my third and last year of sixth form and im bored of education yet i want to do this radio course at leeds uni

however the money aspect is SCARY yet i know i will have the time of my life

so benefits and disadvantages of going to Uni

I talked myself out of uni purely because of the money (and because what i want to do doesn't really require uni), but i would love to do what you're going there for.

to be fair, its not far from you is it, so if you're still living with parents you can stay there.

Going to uni not only improves your prospects but gives you the chance to have 3 years of fun before you have to be boring and get a proper job and think about mortgages and pensions, which scares me more than paying back my student loan.

Someone told me that uni was worth every penny, because you find so much out about yourself etc... added to that it seems like a non stop piss up & sh*gfest...

Seriously though, you can get a loan can't you? And then you only have to pay your loan back out of your wages when you're earning a certain amount of money, it might be 15k.

Your parents are supposed to help you with tutition fees if they earn a certain amount, and couldn't you do something like maybe work all summer after you've finished college?

I know you probably won't want to, but if you were that bothered about money, you probably get about a 12 week holiday & could make at least a couple of grand working full time as well as some decent experience to put on your CV, especially if you try & find something related to what you want to do eventually!

you may as well go to uni whilst you still can without having a debt the size of a small country on your shoulders. the government reform will change in 2006, so bad luck for the younger members hoping to go to uni...

your far better saying in leeds, because you will have family at least to help you with the living costs - i take it you'll be saying home. for those people who think london is a good place to come to uni, your right - but come at your own risk. the living is high!

bridgie has a good idea, do a gap year and work at home, in the mean time helping out someone for a good cause. you'll earn a far bit and be able to pay for some of your fee's.

magenta is right, uni is one of the best places in the world and yes, you do learn alot about yourself

on talk of uni i was watchin something with blair yesterday and he said that the proposed plans will only affect the best schools. the example he gave was cambridge to wolves. cambridge has 4 times taxpayers money so will have to ask for more money from the people goin there!

Sam- Don't worry. Look forward to it. I suggest to everyone to take a Gap year out and work, do a little bit of cheap travelling and then have that money towards going to uni.

my mates sister and friend did marine biology at uni. his sister is ok but her friend is currently working in john lewis going nowhere fast.

also an accountant i know said he has plumbers on his books earning £100,000 !!!!!!!!!

Yes - when you'd going back to do the next year, you'd have to pay the top up fee's.

That's not true. Anyone who starts in 2005 will not be affected by the top-up fees.

If I'd have had these top-up fees to pay I wouldn't have bothered coming. Money is my biggest worry at the minute, but that's mainly because I'm an idle sod and can't be arsed getting a job.

My advise is, don't worry about money until you have to. Get a job and you should be fine. My brother got a job DJing and earnt about £60 a week. He didn't even touch his student loan, he just put it in a high interest account!

Cue Stevo, me thinks he's a little bitter about his degree. I'll be alright because I want to be a midwife, as long as I can do my job well enough to qualify I should be able to get a place anywhere in the country. Will never earn a fortune but hey, job satisfaction and all that...

Cheers for the info Ad, didn't quite understand how it all worked. Thing is I don't want to take a gap year, I want to get out of my house NOW, but its looking like the most viable option. I'll see how things go at home.
