your opinion means nothing to me, really

i'm not a smoker but i think it's great. it gives me an easy way to quickly judge a person. it lets me spot (or smell) really stupid people without even having to talk to them. it's like a public sign saying 'hey, im a really thick person'

altough you don't have a sign around your neck, I was very quick in judging you as a complete tit.

Now i realise that you deem me as a thick person, i suppose my educational achievments, the fact that you havn't spoken to me nor engaged in a verbal jolst with me will not change you opinions.

But thats ok, i have sympathy for you. Indeed you are a person which represents 'fickness' to a tee. Bigoted and unwilling to change your half ass opinions in consideration of other arguements. Intelligence doesn't equate to how many qualifications you have, it lies in the ability to question information and to perceive many angles on a topic, and you my friend have so far shown no success at using this tool.

I may be thick in your eyes pal, but your random opinions are worthless to me at the moment.

i do not need to hit myself in the face with a shovel to know that people who hit themselves in the face with a shovel are stupid. neither is this the case with smoking.

and Stevo you'll be glad to know that you being a thick person I also don't give a crap what you think. have a nice day and die of lung cancer soon. xxx

okay, public debate is great, but who cares? smokers, you know the risks have at it, it doesn't make you thick though. there are tonnes of people who are articulate and intelligent, like stevo who smoke. i also know potheads, junkies, alcoholics, and a whole bevy of other substance users who are rather intelligent as well. they just made a personal choice. rock. that's how it is.

I agree, smoking is a personal choice, it doesn't make you stupid at all it's just a nasty habbit for others who don't smoke but if you want to do it go ahead (like Kendra says...you know the risks) Topher, I agree with you too, going to a bar/pub/club and not expecting to go away smelling of smoke is very stupid - I don't expect to, all I meant was that it woiuld be nice to come away still smelling fresh but that would be in an ideal world which we unfotunately don't live in.People smoking is never going to stop me going to these places, you missunderstood me. All I will say is i have tried smoking and didn't like it - the taste, the act or smell. doesn't mean others don't love it and that's their choice.

A mate of mine who doesn't smoke used to go out with this girl who smokes.

They were in the pub last night and she was blowing smoke in his face for a laugh. He didn't like it and told her to stop and she didn't so he said that her doing that was like him spitting in her face, so don't do it, otherwise he would. She did it again.... So he actually spat in her face. They're not together any more.

timb wrote:1. you have to be thick to make that mistake in the first place

2. even if someone was pinned down and forced to start smoking, if they weren't stupid they would quit within a reasonable time period. to say you're addicted and can't stop is a cop-out. no addiction is so great that you can't break it.

I'm not saying wether I smoke or not (which sort of answers the question really) but if I ever did start smoking it would probably be a really really stupid decision which I would regret from that day onward.

If you've never smoked yourself then how can you say that it isn't hard to break the addiction? If I smoked then I'm sure that I would have tried to give up many times in the past but I don't have a tremendous amount of will power, so I would find it very difficult to give up. That wouldn't make me a stupid person, it would just mean I had made a very stupid mistake by starting smoking in the first place. Making stupid mistakes is part of humanity Mr Timb, so unless you happen to be an android I'm sure you've made a few in the past.

i didn't say it wouldnt be hard, what i was saying is that no addiction is so hard that you can't break it, otherwise there wouldn't be anyone who had given up. so anyone who hasnt given up, or isnt in the process of giving up, doesnt want to give up, so is thick. QED

But to be fair, different people have different tolerance levels. You cannot say that because some people have done it everyone else must be able to. That's like saying that because a few people have passed their driving test first time everyone should be able to do it, which is not the case.

What's QED? (Yes I am thick, possibly.)

Providing you do something constant (e.g going out regularly) it can take 21 days to kick the habit so you wont be addicted anymore.
I have to say that i HATE smoke. My parents smoke, and its terrible, my mates sometimes say at school that they can smell the smoke on me. Smoking is a real turn-off and I can see where timb is comming from, WHY WOULD YOU WANT TO PAY FOR YOUR OWN EARLY DEATH - It's becomming a catchphrase.

ohhh you don't give a crap what i think. You must be some no nonsense kind of guy. Its a shame you didn't show the same attitude when 'uncle roy' promised you a my little pony in return for favours.

Shame on you!

Alas i may die of lung cancer, just as someone may die of liver faliure because they drink lots, just as someone risks their life by cycling to work and just as someone may die from abnormalities from eating genetically modified food types. My money is that you'll die at the hands of someone because your a bit of a dick.

Maybe to kick the need for nicotine out of your system but the overall addiction remains for life.

Why our their certain people on this board with nothing better to do then hop on their soap box and tell people what and what they shouldn't do? In the case of geordie boy, i can understand why you have a negative opinion on the subject as its directly effecting you. If have kids (heaven forbid) then i would give up smoking permanently as it would be extremely unfair upon them. However, i'm young, leading my own life and if i need a drink or a light up to get through these stressfull times then i shall do just that. I didn't take up smoking untill i was 19, it wasn't a fashion thing but i genuinely felt more relaxed and more capable of coping with work. I regret it now, but am not sure what i could have replaced it with at the time.

I shall leave this disscussion with one final thought. My dad is on anti depressents which won't endanger his health but has totally altered his character radically, leaving him as a shell of a man which i used to know. The drug he is on makes him hyper and drowsy at various times of the day. The dad i used to know who was warm, friendly, funny, loving but is now a gibbering, nervous, money obsessed wreck with a poor quality of life which will last for the rest of his days.

Its not not about the length of your life, its about the quality of your life. I may die younger, and i may be 'fick' but god darn hot dog i'll make sure i the best * possible time in the next few months.

argue the case not the person

I think you'll find i did that.

You said all smokers were stupid.

I then explained intelligence is all about viewing different aspects to an arguement then forming a full rhobust and objective response. You were not doing this by making sweeping reckless statements and therefore i deemed you stupid.

you then cunningly retorted

and Stevo you'll be glad to know that you being a thick person I also don't give a crap what you think. have a nice day and die of lung cancer soon. xxx

funnily enough, i think i just read a death wish which is very mush against the theory of 'argue the case not the person'. Your rather flimsy case very much died with this childish, 'thick' response. Failing to respond properley to my rather well built arguement in comparision, you showed yourself as an unintelligable lout.

I'm sure you've won many fans with your desire to see the death of smokers.

god you don't half know how to bore people do you.

maybe i should of made myself clearer when i said i don't care what you think. what i meant was i don't care what you think of me. i don't care if you think i'm thick or not, i don't care if you don't like me. you see, you levied these insults @ me as if i did care, as if anyone would care what you think. you continue with the personal insults, and it leaves me wondering why you love flaming so much. and my comment about smokers being stupid may be a generalisation, but you know what? a lot of generalisations are true, and i stand by mine.

and that last comment of mine about lung cancer was aimed at you and no-one else, it was a sarcastic retort to your over energetic flaming.

i may bore people but i'm certainley fighting off good competition in this thread.

carry on squire...

you see, you levied these insults @ me as if i did care, as if anyone would care what you think

wo wo woooooo, contridiction central sonny jim. I needn't highlight your glaring double standards.

You started the personal insults by calling all smokers stupid, obviously wanting to receive some heat from smoking board members. Therefore I had developed the personal insults as it seems like a launguage your familiar with.

As for 'flaming', this board would be rather boring if there was not insults nor banter. To most people on the board, my comments are tounge and cheek and not intended to cause real offense.

and my comment about smokers being stupid may be a generalisation, but you know what? a lot of generalisations are true, and i stand by mine.

...and a lot of generalisations are not. Unless you've got some evidence to back it up sunshine its worthless. Have you undertaken IQ testing upon smokers? Have you asked why someone smokes and why they don't give up? A generalisation means that someone makes a rather basic statment in relation to a rather more complex issue. Those who stand by ridiculous generalisations should be considered stupid and unenlightened, unwilling to observe other arguements are utilise information to support their arguement.

and that last comment of mine about lung cancer was aimed at you and no-one else, it was a sarcastic retort to your over energetic flaming
