1. just because a lot more people smoke than hit themselves in the face with a shovel does not make it any less stupid
2. there is no realisation period. when you start smoking you know it's bad for your health, unless you were alive in the 50's when people actually didn't know. so to start smoking when you know it's bad for your health is a STUPID thing to do, isn't it!

I would imagine there's a significant difference to the answeres of them 2 questions, and here is how I sum it up.
People hit themselves with a shovel once, it hurts, they learn from it, they don't do it again.
People smoke a cigarette. It's quite a pleasureable experiance, so they smoke a few more. After they've smoked a whole packet they realise it's bad for their health so they try to stop, but they find they crave it too much to be able to stop.
