Top of the Pops is to make the jump from television to radio when it comes to the BBC's World Service from April.

The new show will be hosted each week by Emma B and will provide a run down of the top 40 hits.

The show will also include gossip and news about the acts riding high in the charts.

Phil Harding, BBC World Service's Director of English Networks and News said: "There's a huge potential audience for the programme. BBC World Service has 42 million listeners a week to its English language service.

Top Of The Pops will complement other music programmes on the World Service, whose presenters include John Peel and Charlie Gillett, reports the BBC.

Sorry to ask this but does this mean that there will no longer be a weekly TV show? And also isnt it already on the Radio in the form of the Chart run down on a Sunday evening?

two things

1. Top Of The Pops used to be simulcast on radio 1 and on bbc 1 in the late 80s/early nineties

2. The world service already has a top 40 rundown with them playing the new entries and the number 1 on sunday night or monday night

I heard Emma B present the chart run down on World Service once. I was going round the radio stations and I got to Radio 4 when they joined World Service at night and I couldnt work out why Emma B was presenting on Radio 4. Then I clicked it was world service.

Now, I've never heard of Charlie Gillett, but would someone like to explain to me how the charts compliment John Peel's sort of music in any way?

this will be really neat. i listen to the world service throughout most of the day (as it is carried on local radio here). i would love to hear that crap music on some intellectual radio station. complete with questions of grammar from zimbabwe and recipes from mongolia.
