well there is a certain amount to be said for that. you can just constrain users to using avatars from the gallery.

No, how many different avs would that be, think of the bandwidth, especially when a lot of people can host it themselves.

As long as the Avatars fit within the rules then you are left with plenty of creative freedom. So why get rid of them, plus with out them people wouldn't all look the same and people's individuality would be gone.
