Sorry, IRC is not viewed as something permissable as an academic service. If anyone has an academic case for this it might be considered but it is doubtful this would ever be the case.

i don't see why everything has to be academically productive to be permissible on a university network. sure within prime time 9-5 but at other times i dont see why the give a flying *

Sidla the only chat thing i have been able to access is the virginstudent instant messenger thing. i cant even download most attatchments to emails here. Northumbria = prison state

That sound pretty harsh. I can do most things, but quite a lot of good stuff is blocked, like yahoo games.

our school got a new line in so we now get amazingly fast internet... but with that new line came a brand new proxy server which blocks nearly everything. Messenger wont work, any program other than a web browser wont work that needs to access the net. I got Real One working the other day but since then they seem to block that now aswell.

not really. if the proxy is setup properly, everything requiring internet access will NEED to go through it, and if it is setup only for port 80 web browsing then nothing else on any other port will work.
