Forgive me for being stupid (as usual), but what exactly is so special about the Grand National? Are there any limitations to the horses that can enter, or do you have to somehow qualify?

It's supposed to be the top horses, but I'm sure some of the runners are nothing more than glue. It's special because they have a hundred horses at the start, but normally only 10-20 finish. The rest are shot.

They are only shot if they go and break their leg or any other part which would deem them useless as a race horse. So starts the story of how someone told me they would be dog meat after that.

I never knew there were 100 originally...the Sun listed 40 on the day, and 13 finished. Only horse race I watched this year, but just because it's mildly entertaining with 30 jumps then a few jockeys fall off and get trampled on. Looks very sore tho.
