I wonder why you sometimes hear it instead of the other one.

I've always thought that Rule Britannia should be our national anthem.

I always get much more patriotic when hearing that than God save whatsherface.

land of hope and glory is the song we march to in graduation... more aptly named pomp and circumcision. i think your national anthem should still be god save the queen, ala sex pistols. HOW LAME CAN I BE?

No, you're wrong. God Save the Queen is the British national anthem. Land of Hope and Glory is the English national anthem. The Welsh national anthem is 'Land of my Fathers' and the Scottish national anthem is 'Flower of Scotland'. I don't know if the Northern Irish have one.

Yeah, I edited it. Sorces tell me the Northern Irish anthem is "A Londonderry Air" which has the same tune as Danny Boy, but I'm not sure if that's the official national anthem. Bob might know.

Ireland- Gaelic words:

Sinne Firnna Fáil
A tá fé gheall ag Éirinn,

buion dár slua

Thar toinn do ráinig chugainn,

Fé mhóid bheith saor.

Sean tír ár sinsir feasta

Ní fhagfar fé'n tiorán ná fén tráil

Anocht a théam sa bhearna bhaoil,

Le gean ar Ghaeil chun báis nó saoil

Le guna screach fé lámhach na bpiléar

Seo libh canaídh Amhrán na bhFiann.

English Words

Soldiers are we

whose lives are pledged to Ireland;

Some have come

from a land beyond the wave.

Sworn to be free,

No more our ancient sire land

Shall shelter the despot or the slave.

Tonight we man the gap of danger

In Erin's cause, come woe or weal

'Mid cannons' roar and rifles peal,

We'll chant a soldier's song.

FLOWER OF SCOTLAND
(translation by John Angus Macleod)

O Fhlu\ir na h-Albann,

a sheas an aghaidh
feachd uailleil Iomhair
's a ruaig e dhachaigh

Tha 'n eachdraidh du\inte

English words:

The Flower of Scotland
1.
O flower of Scotland
When will we see
Your like again
That fought and died for
Your wee bit hill and glen
And stood against him
Proud Edward's army
And sent him homeward
Tae think again

2.
The hills are bare now
And autumn leaves lie thick and still
O'er land that is lost now
Which those so dearly held
And stood against him
Proud Edward's army
And sent him homeward
Tae think again

3.
Those days are passed now
And in the past they must remain
But we can still rise now
And be the nation again
And stood against him
Proud Edward's army
And sent him homeward
Tae think again

Wales:
Welsh:

Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau
Mae hen wlad fy nhadau yn annwyl i mi,
Gwlad beirdd a chantorion, enwogion o fri;
Ei gwrol ryfelwyr, gwladgarwyr tra mad,
Tros ryddid collasant eu gwaed.

Cytgan
Gwlad, gwlad, pleidiol wyf i'm gwlad,
Tra môr yn fur
I'r bur hoffbau,
O bydded i'r heniaith barhau.

Hen Gymru fynyddig, paradwys y bardd,
Pob dyffryn, pob clogwyn, i'm golwg sydd hardd;
Trwy deimlad gwladgarol, mor swynol yw si
Ei nentydd, afonydd, i mi.

Cytgan

Os treisiodd y gelyn fy ngwlad dan ei droed,
Mae hen iaith y Gymry mor fyw ag erioed,
Ni luddiwyd yr awen gan erchyll law brad,
Na thelyn berseiniol fy ngwlad.

English words:

THE WELSH NATIONAL ANTHEM,
AN UNOFFICIAL ENGLISH VERSION
The land of my fathers, the land of my choice,
The land in which poets and minstrels rejoice;
The land whose stern warriors were true to the core,
While bleeding for freedom of yore.

Chorus
Wales! Wales! fav'rite land of Wales!
While sea her wall, may naught befall
To mar the old language of Wales.

Old mountainous Cambria, the Eden of bards,
Each hill and each valley, excite my regards;
To the ears of her patriots how charming still seems
The music that flows in her streams.

My country tho' crushed by a hostile array,
The language of Cambria lives out to this day;
The muse has eluded the traitors' foul knives,
The harp of my country survives.

CENA believes that it is wrong for England and the English to use the British national anthem as the English national anthem. It would therefore also be wrong for England to adopt another British song as the English national anthem. The content of the lyrics of the English national anthem must therefore be about or refer to England as opposed to Britain.

I agree with that. the other parts of the UK have had to come up with their own, so why should the English just aquiere the British one? its silly!

Good to know, thanks!
