It appears Radio 1 is losing further listeners. Why is this? What shows do you dislike? Opinions on music selection?
Personally I think radio 1 has been blinded by the whole 'new music' label. Recruiting far too many 'specialist' dj's and too many bland 'fill-ins'. The most popular shows (minus the breakfast slot factor) is mark and lard and moyles. Perhaps the reason why these to shows are successfull is that they're not that much different to the DLT generation of broadcasters. Personality radio in modern day context. Whilst some of the specialist shows have great formats (ie mary anne hobbs rock show) one has to question the audience figures that some specialist shows could possibly acheive. Whilst in some place like london, the ethnic mix is varied..this is not the case in all cities.
My half arsed solution is to recruit more personality jocks (perhaps get the cream of new stand up comics to do a once weekly show), play some slightly older music as opposed to some of the bilge given time on the airwaves, fire the likes of emma b, jabrone, KC,etc who could do well on commercial stations but shouldn't be working for radio 1 and merge some of the specialist shows.
DJ's IN
Moyles
Mark and Lard
Colin Murray
Edith Bowman
Christian O Connel
Scott Mills
DJ's OUT
Jo Whiley
Sanjeev and Friction
Sara Cox
Dave Pearce
Pete Tong
etc
How about a series of programmes which showcase some of the student, hospital and commercial shows on late at night of course. An ideal opportunity to test and evaluate the next generation of broadcasters.
